Vanilla WoW 1.12.1 Client Download — How to Get and Set Up the Classic Client

The vanilla World of Warcraft 1.12.1 client is no longer sold or distributed by Blizzard. The official path to play classic-era WoW is through WoW Classic on Battle.net, which Blizzard launched in 2019. However, many players also run the original 1.12.1 client to play on private servers or to use classic-era addons exactly as they were designed.

This guide covers how to obtain the 1.12.1 client, verify it's the correct version, and set up your addons properly.

Option 1: WoW Classic (Official)

The easiest and most supported path is through WoW Classic on Battle.net. Blizzard's Classic product runs the same 1.12 game systems with quality-of-life improvements and official server infrastructure. If you want a stable, supported experience, this is the right choice.

Most addons on this site are compatible with both WoW Classic (official) and private server 1.12.1 clients. The core addon API did not change between 1.12.1 and Classic.

Option 2: Private Server Client

Private servers run the original 1.12.1 client files. These servers are community-operated and are not affiliated with Blizzard. Notable private servers include Kronos, Turtle WoW, and various others that have operated for years with stable populations.

Important: The 1.12.1 client is old software. Only download it from well-established community sources with long track records — private server communities that have been operating for years and have verifiable communities on Discord or Reddit. Avoid random file hosting sites.

Verifying You Have the Right Version

Once installed, you can verify your client version by launching the game and looking at the bottom-right corner of the login screen. It should display:

Version 1.12.1.5875 (Aug 22 2006)

If your client shows a different version number, you have a different era of the game (TBC is 2.4.3, WotLK is 3.3.5). For 1.12.1 addons from this site, you need specifically 1.12.1.5875.

Setting Up the AddOns Folder

After installing the client, locate your World of Warcraft installation folder. Inside you'll find:

If the AddOns folder doesn't exist, create it. The exact path is typically:

Installing Addons

Every addon on this site downloads as a ZIP file. To install:

Download the ZIP from any addon page on VanillaWoW Addons
Extract the ZIP — you'll get a folder (e.g., Questie/)
Copy that folder into Interface/AddOns/
Launch the game and click AddOns at the character select screen
Enable the addon and check "Load out of date AddOns" if it shows as outdated
Log in — the addon is active
