Leatherworking Guide — Vanilla WoW 1-300 (Patch 1.12.1)

Leatherworking is one of the most rewarding crafting professions in vanilla WoW. It pairs naturally with Skinning (your primary source of leather), produces some of the strongest pre-raid and raid gear in the game, and has three unique specializations that each serve a different playstyle. This guide takes you from 1 to 300 with the most material-efficient path.

Why Choose Leatherworking?

Leatherworking produces BiS gear for Druids, Rogues, Hunters, and Shamans at multiple stages of the game. The Hide of the Wild (Tribal specialization) is one of the best healing cloaks in all of vanilla WoW. Devilsaur Set is pre-raid BiS for Hunter and Rogue DPS. The profession also supplies armor kits — consumable enhancements that boost armor on any gear slot — which sell consistently on the Auction House.

Tip: Pair Leatherworking with Skinning to drastically reduce your material costs. You can skin virtually everything you kill while leveling, building up leather stockpiles naturally.

Specializations

At skill level 225, you choose one of three Leatherworking specializations. You can only have one — choose carefully, as changing costs materials.

Total Materials Needed (1–300)

Buy or farm these before you start to avoid interruptions mid-leveling:

  • ~370 Light Leather
  • ~590 Medium Leather
  • ~390 Heavy Leather
  • ~700 Thick Leather
  • ~350 Rugged Leather
  • 8 Cured Heavy Hide
  • 5 Iron Buckles
  • ~115 Turtle Scales
  • 6 Wildvine

Leveling 1–300: Step by Step

Skill 1–75: Light Leather Foundation

Train Apprentice Leatherworking from any Leatherworking trainer. Craft Light Leather Armor Kit until skill 45, then switch to Handstitched Leather Cloak until 75. These are vendor-sellable so you recover some material cost.

Skill 75–150: Medium Leather

Learn Journeyman Leatherworking. Craft Dark Leather Gloves or Cured Medium Hide from 75 to 100, then Medium Armor Kit to 120. From 120 to 150 craft Heavy Armor Kit — these sell well on the AH and are worth listing rather than vendoring.

Skill 150–225: Heavy Leather

Learn Expert Leatherworking. Craft Barbaric Shoulders (requires Cured Heavy Hide) from 150 to 180. Switch to Guardian Gloves or Heavy Armor Kit from 180 to 225. At 225 you unlock specialization quests.

Skill 225–300: Thick and Rugged Leather

Complete your specialization quest at 225. Then craft Thick Armor Kit from 225 to 250. From 250 to 265, make Rugged Armor Kit — these consistently sell on the AH for crafting consumable income. From 265 to 285 craft Wicked Leather Headband. Finish 285 to 300 with Wicked Leather Bracers.

Notable Crafted Gear

The real reason to level Leatherworking is the endgame recipes:

  • Devilsaur Gauntlets + Leggings — pre-raid BiS for Hunter and Rogue, craft from Devilsaur Leather
  • Hide of the Wild (Tribal) — arguably the best healer cloak in vanilla WoW
  • Stormshroud Armor (Elemental) — powerful Rogue set with extra energy on crits
  • Black Dragonscale Breastplate/Leggings (Dragonscale) — fire resistance gear for Molten Core
  • Heavy Scorpid Set — solid pre-raid gear for Hunters and Shamans

Use Gatherer alongside Skinning to track skinnable mob locations and leather node spots on your map. Every time you skin a mob, Gatherer records the location — over time you build a complete map of efficient farming routes.
