Cooking Guide — Vanilla WoW 1-300 (Patch 1.12.1)

Cooking is the most underestimated secondary profession in vanilla WoW. At max level, it produces food buffs that every raider is expected to bring — Grilled Squid (+10 Agility), Nightfin Soup (+8 MP5), Blessed Sunfruit (+10 Strength). These consumables are consumed by the stack every raid night, meaning max-level Cooking also has steady income potential.

Why Level Cooking?

Unlike primary professions, Cooking doesn't compete for a profession slot — it's a secondary profession anyone can take alongside their main two. The time investment is low, the materials largely come from fishing or vendor-bought, and the end result directly improves your raid performance. Every serious raider should have max Cooking.

Leveling 1–300

Skill 1–40: Basic Recipes

Train Apprentice Cooking from any trainer in a capital city. Cook Spiced Wolf Meat or Roasted Boar Meat from vendor-bought Simple Wood and any boar/wolf meat to reach 40. Both vendors and mobs in starting zones supply the raw materials.

Skill 40–80: Boar Ribs

Cook Boar Ribs from Razorfen Kraul-drop or Barrens boar meat. Alternatively, Smoked Bear Meat works if you're in Ashenvale or Hillsbrad. Reach Journeyman Cooking from any trainer at 50.

Skill 80–175: Kaldorei Spider Kabob and Soothing Turtle Bisque

Cook Soothing Turtle Bisque from Turtle Meat (farmed from turtles in Hillsbrad, Wetlands, or Tanaris) from 80 to 175. Expert Cooking is learned from a book sold by Wulan in Desolace — pick it up at skill 125.

Skill 175–225: Tender Wolf Steak

Cook Tender Wolf Steak (requires Wolf Meat from wolves in Feralas, Western Plaguelands) from 175 to 225. This is one of the smoothest leveling ranges in Cooking.

Skill 225–285: Artisan and Silk Packages

Artisan Cooking is taught by Dirge Quikcleave in Gadgetzan (Tanaris). Cook Grilled Squid (requires Raw Spotted Yellowtail) or Lobster Stew from 225 to 285. Fishing supplies the materials if you level both together.

Skill 285–300: Juicy Bear Burger and Smoked Desert Dumplings

Cook Smoked Desert Dumplings from a quest chain in Silithus, or use Dirge's Kickin' Chimaerok Chops (Chimaerok Tenderloin from Isle of Dread). Both provide skill points to 300.

Pair With Fishing

Cooking and Fishing are natural companions. Nightfin Snapper (for Nightfin Soup) and Raw Spotted Yellowtail (for Grilled Squid) come from fishing in specific zones. If you level both together, your material costs drop to near zero. The combination is one of the most efficient gold-per-hour activities for non-combat gathering.
