Engineering Guide — Vanilla WoW 1-300 (Patch 1.12.1)
Engineering is unique in vanilla WoW — it's the only profession where the primary purpose is personal power rather than profit. Engineers get access to explosives, gadgets, scopes, trinkets, and gear that no other profession can produce. It's expensive to level, but the endgame rewards are genuinely game-changing in both PvE and PvP.
Why Choose Engineering?
Engineering provides items unavailable to any other class or profession:
- Goblin Sapper Charge — massive AoE damage, essential for trash in raids
- Gnomish Net-o-Matic Projector (Gnomish) — roots an enemy in PvP
- Arcanite Dragonling — powerful DPS trinket
- Biznicks 247x128 Accurascope — BiS scope for Hunters
- Hyper-Radiant Flame Reflector / Gyrofreeze Ice Reflector — reflect magic spells in PvP
- Gnomish Battle Chicken (Gnomish) — summons a chicken that buffs your melee party's attack speed
Gnomish vs. Goblin Engineering
| Specialization | Best For | Key Items |
|---|---|---|
| Gnomish | PvP, fun gadgets, support | Battle Chicken, Net-o-Matic, Harm Prevention Belt, World Enlarger |
| Goblin | PvE DPS, raiding | Sapper Charge (huge AoE), Goblin Rocket Helmet, Rocket Boots |
For raiding guilds, Goblin Engineering is generally preferred — Sapper Charges contribute meaningful raid DPS on trash. For PvP, Gnomish Engineering's gadgets are often more impactful.
Materials Overview
Engineering is material-intensive. Expect to spend 100-200g leveling to 300 if buying materials from the AH. Pair with Mining to reduce costs significantly — most Engineering materials are smelted bars.
Primary materials needed: ~100 Copper Bar, ~60 Bronze Bar, ~100 Iron Bar, ~50 Gold Bar, ~150 Mithril Bar, ~100 Thorium Bar, plus vendor items (Weak Flux, Heavy Grinding Stone, etc.).
Leveling 1–300
Skill 1–75: Copper and Rough Parts
Craft Rough Blasting Powder (Rough Stone) and Copper Tube from Apprentice Engineering. Make Rough Copper Bomb and Rough Boomstick to reach 75. These train you on the core loop of Engineering: combine raw materials with vendor parts to make gadgets.
Skill 75–150: Bronze and Iron
Learn Journeyman Engineering. Craft Flying Tiger Goggles and Explosive Sheep (entertaining and genuinely useful) from 75 to 120. Switch to Bronze Tube and Iron Strut items from 120 to 150. Learn Expert Engineering at 125 from a trainer.
Skill 150–200: Mithril and Gyrochronatom
Craft Mithril Tube, Hi-Explosive Bomb, and Mithril Casing from 150 to 200. The Hi-Explosive Bomb is a great item to keep for leveling — it deals real damage in the 200+ range and scales with Engineering skill.
Skill 200–300: Artisan to 300
Artisan Engineering is taught by trainers in Gadgetzan. Complete the Gnomish or Goblin specialization quest at 200 (you cannot change this later without significant cost). Craft Thorium Widget, Thorium Tube, Hyper-Radiant Flame Reflector, and Masterwork Target Dummy to reach 300.
Key Endgame Crafted Items
