Skinning Guide — Vanilla WoW 1-300 (Patch 1.12.1)
Skinning is the most natural gathering profession in vanilla WoW — you level it passively by skinning beasts you kill while questing, with essentially zero extra effort. At max level, Rugged Leather, Thick Leather, and specialty leathers like Devilsaur Leather command strong prices on the Auction House and supply Leatherworking crafters throughout the raiding tier.
Why Choose Skinning?
- Zero opportunity cost while leveling — you skin mobs you were going to kill anyway
- Pairs with Leatherworking — eliminates most material costs for LW leveling and endgame crafts
- Devilsaur Leather — high-value specialty leather for pre-raid BiS Devilsaur Set (Hunter/Rogue)
- Rugged Leather — consistent AH seller throughout the raiding tier
Skinning Skill Requirements
| Mob Level | Skill Required | Leather Produced |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | 1 | Ruined Leather Scraps → Light Leather |
| 11–20 | 75 | Light Leather, Light Hide |
| 21–30 | 100 | Medium Leather, Medium Hide |
| 31–40 | 150 | Heavy Leather, Heavy Hide |
| 41–50 | 200 | Thick Leather, Thick Hide |
| 51–60 | 250+ | Rugged Leather, Rugged Hide |
Rule of thumb: Your Skinning skill should be approximately 5x the mob level to guarantee a full skin. Skinning lower-level mobs than your current skill gives fast skill-ups when you're behind.
Leveling 1–300 by Zone
Skill 1–100: Starting Zones
Skin every beast you kill while questing through your starting zone and the first major zone your faction sends you to. No specific farming needed — natural leveling keeps Skinning current if you remember to skin every kill. Pick up Journeyman Skinning from any trainer when you reach 50.
Skill 100–200: Hillsbrad, STV, Wetlands
The mid-game presents more beast-heavy zones. Hillsbrad Foothills (bears, wolves, yetis) and Stranglethorn Vale (tigers, raptors, gorillas) are excellent for skill 100-175. Wetlands crocodiles and raptors also work well for Alliance. Pick up Expert Skinning at 150.
Skill 200–270: Feralas and Tanaris
Feralas (yetis, cats, bears) is excellent for 200-250. Tanaris (hyenas, basilisks, crocolisks) carries you to 270 efficiently. The basilisks in Tanaris give Heavy and Thick Leather which sells well. Pick up Artisan Skinning at 225.
Skill 270–300: Burning Steppes and Un'Goro
The core zones for finishing 270-300 and max-skill farming:
- Un'Goro Crater — Devilsaurs, raptors, gorillas. The Devilsaurs in Un'Goro give Devilsaur Leather (required for pre-raid BiS Devilsaur Set) which is worth significant gold per skin.
- Burning Steppes — dragonkin, wyverns, and core hounds give Rugged Leather at high density.
- Winterspring — yetis and chimeras give Rugged Leather; less contested than Burning Steppes.
Max Level: Farming Devilsaur Leather
Devilsaur Leather comes exclusively from Devilsaurs in Un'Goro Crater. The Devilsaur Set (Devilsaur Gauntlets + Leggings) is pre-raid BiS for Hunters and Rogues, keeping Devilsaur Leather in consistent high demand. Devilsaurs respawn frequently but are popular farming targets — coordinate with guildmates or go during off-peak hours. Use Auctioneer to track current prices before farming.
