Vanilla WoW Hunter Guide — Leveling, Raiding & Gear (Patch 1.12.1)
The Hunter is the premier ranged physical DPS class in vanilla WoW and one of the smoothest leveling experiences in the game. With a pet that takes all the hits while you shoot from range, Hunters level efficiently from 1 to 60 with minimal downtime. At endgame, Hunters provide sustained physical DPS, unique utility through Misdirection-like threat management, and Feign Death for aggro resets.
Class Overview
Hunters are available to all races except Undead and Gnome. Key class mechanics:
- Pets — your companion attacks independently, holds aggro while leveling, and scales with your stats
- The Deadzone — a critical mechanic: Hunters cannot use ranged attacks between 5 and 8 yards. Enemies in the deadzone require melee weapons. Learn to kite enemies out of this range or use Concussive Shot to maintain Distance.
- Feign Death — drops all threat instantly; essential for managing aggro in raids
- Ammo — Hunters consume arrows/bullets. Higher-tier ammo increases ranged DPS significantly; Engineer Hunters craft the best ammo in the game
- Aspect of the Hawk — primary combat aspect, increases ranged attack power
Leveling Spec: Beast Mastery (1–60)
Beast Mastery is the correct leveling spec. Your pet does most of the work — holding aggro, absorbing damage, and killing enemies while you auto-attack from range. With BM talents, your pet becomes a tanking machine that lets you pull and kill at maximum efficiency.
Core talents: Endurance Training, Thick Hide, Bestial Swiftness, Ferocity, Intimidation (pet AoE stun), Frenzy, Bestial Wrath (capstone — makes pet immune to crowd control and fear).
Pet Management While Leveling
- Feed your pet regularly to keep happiness at maximum — unhappy pets deal 25% less damage
- Best leveling pets: Wind Serpent (lightning breath stacks nicely), Cat (highest DPS), Wolf (Furious Howl party buff)
- Set your pet to Defensive stance while leveling — it auto-attacks anything that hits you
- Keep your pet's skills trained by visiting a Pet Trainer in any major city
Raiding Spec: Survival or Marksmanship
Survival (19/0/32) — Threat Management Focus
The primary raiding spec for Hunters in vanilla. Feign Death resets threat, letting you maintain maximum DPS output throughout a fight. Survival talents add Surefooted (+3% hit chance), Clever Traps, and Humanoid Slaying for specific fights. Use this for most progression content.
Marksmanship (0/31/20) — Pure DPS
Higher sustained DPS than Survival in a vacuum but generates more threat. Best used when you have significant Feign Death cooldown management and don't need the Survival hit talents (already at hit cap from gear).
The Deadzone — Managing It in Raids
The 5-8 yard deadzone catches Hunters at the worst possible moments. In raids:
- Always maintain 9+ yards from your target. Position behind or to the side of the boss when possible.
- If a boss charges you or you get knocked back, immediately run to 9+ yards before shooting
- Use Wing Clip (melee snare) if an enemy gets to you and you need distance
- Keep Disengage available for emergency repositioning
Gear Priorities
Hunter stat priority:
- Hit rating to cap — 9% hit needed against raid bosses (level 63). Surefooted talent gives 3%, so 6% from gear.
- Agility — attack power, crit chance, and armor
- Attack Power
- Crit %

Engineering for Hunters
Engineering is the strongest profession choice for Hunters in vanilla WoW for two reasons: Biznicks 247x128 Accurascope (BiS scope for ranged weapons) and Thorium Headed Arrow / Thorium Shells (best ammo in the game, crafted by Engineers). No other profession provides comparable damage gains for Hunters.
Recommended Addons
- KLH Threat Meter — Hunters use Feign Death to reset threat, but you need to know when to use it. Watch the threat meter constantly during DPS phases.
- Deadly Boss Mods — boss ability timers tell you when to pre-Feign Death before a mechanic that might reset threat regardless.
- OmniCC — Rapid Fire, Bestial Wrath (if leveling BM), and trinket cooldowns tracked directly on your action bar.
- Questie — the most important leveling addon for Hunters, who often have unique quest objectives (rare pet tames, specific mob kills) spread across large zones.
