Vanilla WoW Druid Guide — Feral Leveling, Restoration Raiding (Patch 1.12.1)

The Druid is the most versatile class in vanilla WoW — capable of tanking, melee DPS, healing, and caster DPS across different specs. In practice, the strongest path is to level as Feral for efficient 1-60 progression and then transition to Restoration for raiding, where Druids provide the best HoT healing in the game and bring utility through Mark of the Wild, Innervate, and Rebirth.

Class Overview

Druids are available to both Alliance (Night Elf) and Horde (Tauren). Key class mechanics:

  • Shapeshifting — Bear (tank), Cat (melee DPS), Moonkin/Balance (caster), Travel and Aquatic forms for movement
  • Mark of the Wild — 30-minute buff increasing all stats and resistances, one of the best buffs in the game
  • Innervate — returns 400% of the Druid's base mana over 20 seconds; targeted at the Priest or highest-priority healer on mana-intensive fights
  • Rebirth — the only in-combat resurrection in vanilla WoW; one use per combat, game-changing on progression bosses

Leveling Spec: Feral (1–60)

Feral is decisively the fastest Druid leveling spec. Cat form delivers competitive melee DPS, Bear form provides survivability when pulls get dangerous, and travel form removes the need to buy a mount until 40 (and even then, Cat sprint + travel form is competitive with basic mounts).

Core Feral leveling talents: Ferocity, Feline Swiftness, Sharpened Claws, Predatory Strikes (capstone), Furor for full energy on shapeshift.

Feral Leveling Rotation

  1. Enter Cat Form
  2. Open with Ravage (stealth, if available)
  3. Rake for bleed damage
  4. Build 5 combo points with Shred or Claw
  5. Finish with Ferocious Bite
  6. Use Prowl to reset between pulls for Ravage openers

Raiding Spec: Restoration

Restoration Druids in vanilla are HoT (heal-over-time) specialists. Rejuvenation, Regrowth, and Lifebloom (when available) provide sustained healing that doesn't scale with reaction time the way Paladin or Priest healing does. The canonical Restoration spec is Resto 30/0/21:

  • Improved Rejuvenation (3/3) — core talent, strengthens your primary heal
  • Nature's Grasp and Nature's Reach for balance utility
  • Tranquil Spirit — reduces mana cost of Healing Touch and Tranquility
  • Improved Regrowth — increases crit chance of Regrowth; crits proc Swiftmend
  • Swiftmend (capstone) — consumes a HoT to instantly heal for its remaining value; excellent emergency heal

Healing Priority in Raids

Restoration Druid healing is about proactive HoT management rather than reactive spot heals:

  1. Keep Rejuvenation rolling on the main tank at all times
  2. Apply Regrowth on the tank before heavy damage windows (leaves a HoT)
  3. Use Healing Touch rank 4 (reduced cast time talent) for efficient mid-heals
  4. Save Swiftmend for emergency clutch situations when a tank drops fast
  5. Use Innervate on the Priest or whoever is lowest on mana at around 30% mana
  6. Save Rebirth for tank deaths — use it immediately to prevent wipe cascades

Recommended Addons

  • HealBot — essential for managing HoTs across a 40-man raid. The ability to click-apply Rejuvenation and Regrowth to multiple targets quickly is what separates a good Resto Druid from a great one.
  • Decursive — Druids remove curses. In many BWL and AQ40 fights, fast curse removal is a core mechanic.
  • Deadly Boss Mods — pre-applying HoTs before predictable damage spikes.
