Vanilla WoW Paladin Guide — Leveling, Healing & Raiding (Patch 1.12.1)
The Paladin is the Alliance-exclusive support and healing class in vanilla WoW. While Paladins can level as Retribution, their primary role in endgame content is Holy healing — providing strong single-target heals, essential blessings, auras, and off-healing. A well-played Paladin keeps tanks alive through sustained throughput that Priests can't match in long fights.
Class Overview
Paladins in vanilla WoW are defined by their buffs. Every 5 minutes, a Paladin casts Greater Blessings on the entire raid — Blessing of Might for melee, Blessing of Wisdom for casters, Blessing of Kings for high-priority targets. Managing blessings efficiently is a core Paladin responsibility beyond healing itself.
Faction: Alliance only
Primary armor: Plate (at level 40), Mail before that
Weapon types: 1H and 2H swords, maces, axes; shields
Primary role in raids: Main tank and offtank healer, blessing management
Leveling Spec: Retribution (1–60)
Leveling as Holy or Protection is painfully slow due to poor melee damage. Retribution is the correct leveling spec, maximizing damage through Seal of Command or Seal of Righteousness + Judgement rotations.
Key talents: Improved Seal of the Crusader, Deflection, Vindication, Sanctity Aura (capstone). Reach level 40, get your mount (Paladins get a free one from a class quest), and push through to 60 efficiently.
Raiding Spec: Holy (31 points)
For raiding, respec to Holy 31/11/9 or Holy 31/20/0. The core Holy talents:
- Divine Intellect (5/5) — massive mana pool increase, essential for long fights
- Illumination (5/5) — returns 60% of a critical heal's mana cost; the single most important Paladin talent for sustained healing
- Holy Power (5/5) — +5% spell crit to Holy spells
- Holy Shock — instant heal/damage with 15-second cooldown; primarily useful for emergency clutch heals
Healing Rotation
Paladin healing in vanilla is relatively straightforward but requires discipline:
- Keep Flash of Light as your primary spam heal (cheap, fast, procs Illumination)
- Use Holy Light for large incoming damage windows
- Keep Seal of Wisdom active and judge it for mana return on longer fights
- Pre-cast Holy Light when tank damage is predictable (boss abilities on timer)
- Maintain your Aura — Devotion Aura for most fights, Fire/Frost Resistance Aura for specific encounters
Blessings Management
Assigning blessings correctly is the Paladin's unique raid responsibility:
| Blessing | Assign To | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Blessing of Kings (+10% all stats) | Tanks, priority DPS | High |
| Blessing of Might (+attack power) | Warriors, Rogues, Hunters, Feral Druids | High |
| Blessing of Wisdom (+mana regen) | Priests, Mages, Warlocks, Shamans | High |
| Blessing of Salvation (-30% threat) | High-threat DPS on progression content | Situational |
| Blessing of Sanctuary | Tanks on heavy-hit fights | Tank-specific |

Recommended Addons
For Holy Paladin:
- HealBot — one-click healing through raid frames. Essential for competitive healing throughput in a 40-man raid.
- Deadly Boss Mods — boss ability timers. Pre-casting Holy Light before a predictable tank damage window is one of the highest-value skills a Paladin healer has.
- OmniCC — Divine Shield, Lay on Hands, Holy Shock cooldown tracking.
