Vanilla WoW Priest Guide — Leveling, Holy Raiding & Shadow (Patch 1.12.1)
The Priest is the premier healing class in vanilla WoW. Holy Priests provide the highest raw healing throughput in the game through Prayer of Healing, Greater Heal, and Renew. The class also has one of the strongest leveling specs in Shadow — a ranged damage dealer that can solo efficiently and support groups with off-healing. Most Priests raid as Holy but level as Shadow.
Class Overview
Priests are the only class with race-specific abilities in vanilla WoW. Human Priests get Desperate Prayer (free instant self-heal) and Feedback. Dwarf Priests get Fear Ward — arguably the most powerful single ability in vanilla raiding. Night Elf Priests get Starshards and Elune's Grace. Undead Priests get Devouring Plague and Touch of Weakness. Troll Priests get Hex of Weakness and Shadowguard.
Leveling Spec: Shadow (1–60)
Level as Shadow 21/0/30 or deep Shadow 0/0/51. Shadow gives you Vampiric Embrace (passive AoE healing from your damage), Shadowform (increases Shadow damage 15%, reduces physical damage 15%), and Mind Flay. You kill enemies faster than Holy or Discipline, mana efficiency is strong due to Spirit Tap (mana regen on kill), and you can still heal instances without a full respec.
Leveling Rotation
- Open with Shadow Word: Pain (instant, high total damage)
- Cast Mind Blast (big hit, 8-sec cooldown)
- Mind Flay to finish — slows enemy and deals damage over 3 seconds
- If mob reaches you, Psychic Scream to buy Distance
Raiding Spec: Holy
For raids, respec to Holy 31/20/0 or Holy 23/28/0 (with improved Power Word: Shield from Discipline). Core talents:
- Improved Renew — stronger HoT, your most mana-efficient heal
- Holy Specialization — +5% crit to Holy spells; triggers Inspiration (armor buff on crit)
- Divine Fury — reduces cast time of Smite, Holy Fire, Greater Heal, and Heal
- Inspiration — reduces target's physical damage taken 25% for 15 seconds after a crit heal; essential for tank survival
- Spiritual Healing — increases healing done by 10%
Healing Priority
In a 40-man raid, Priests typically focus on main tank healing (highest priority) and raid healing during AoE damage phases:
- Greater Heal rank 4 on the main tank — high throughput, proc Inspiration
- Renew on the tank between Greater Heal casts for smooth HP maintenance
- Flash Heal for emergency situations when a tank drops fast
- Prayer of Healing for AoE raid healing (expensive mana-wise, use selectively)
- Power Word: Shield on tanks before predictable heavy hits (use sparingly — Weakened Soul debuff)
