Vanilla WoW Class Guide: Best Addons for Each Class in 1.12.1
Different classes in vanilla WoW 1.12.1 have fundamentally different combat mechanics — and their addon needs reflect that. A healer needs to see the entire raid's health at a glance. A rogue needs precise cooldown tracking. A warrior tank needs to watch threat every second. Here's what each class should install.
Warrior
Warriors are the primary tanks in vanilla WoW and also viable DPS (especially Fury for raiding). Both specs share core addon needs.
Essential
- KLH Threat Meter — as the tank, this is your most important tool. You watch it to know if any DPS is close to pulling aggro. As fury DPS, you watch it to know when to throttle back.
- Deadly Boss Mods — boss timers for every raid encounter. Particularly important for managing defensive cooldowns on ability timers.
- CTMod — enhanced unit frames let you see your own health and rage clearly, and better target frames give you cleaner combat feedback.
Paladin
Paladins are primarily healers in vanilla WoW, though they also fill tanking and DPS roles in some group content.
Essential
- HealBot — for healer Paladins, this is essential. One-click healing through a Clean raid frame display.
- Decursive — Paladins can cleanse magic, poison, and disease. In raids like AQ40, fast cleansing is critical.
- OmniCC — Paladin abilities have varied cooldowns. Seeing them on your action bar prevents you from wasting GCDs waiting for abilities that are actually available.
Priest
Priests are the healing backbone of vanilla WoW. Both Holy and Discipline specs share the same addon needs in raid environments.
Essential
- HealBot — mandatory for Priest healers. The efficiency gain from one-click healing vs. click-to-target then cast is enormous over a 3-hour raid night.
- Decursive — Priests dispel magic. In fights with heavy magic debuffs (common in AQ and Naxx), fast reaction time on dispels is a core healer responsibility.
- Deadly Boss Mods — knowing when damage spikes are coming lets you pre-cast heals and avoid tank deaths.
Druid
Druids fill multiple roles in vanilla — restoration healing, feral tanking/DPS, and balance ranged DPS. The addon stack varies by spec.
Restoration
- HealBot — essential, same as Priest.
- Decursive — Druids remove curses and poisons. In a 40-man raid with multiple sources of both, Decursive is the difference between fast cleanses and missed ones.
Feral / Balance
- KLH Threat Meter — both feral DPS and balance generate significant threat. Watch it.
- OmniCC — feral cooldowns (Tiger's Fury, Barkskin) and balance proc tracking.
Mage
Mages are the primary AoE and single-target damage dealers in vanilla WoW. They also provide consumables (food, water, portals) and crowd control (Polymorph, Blizzard kiting).
Essential
- KLH Threat Meter — Mages generate enormous threat through Arcane Explosion and Pyroblast crits. Watching threat is mandatory, especially in trash pulls.
- OmniCC — tracking Combustion, Presence of Mind, Cold Snap, and trinket cooldowns in real time.
- Deadly Boss Mods — knowing when to stop casting AoE (before enrages or ability transitions) requires timer awareness.
Rogue
Rogues are pure melee DPS in vanilla WoW, with the most complex energy/combo point rotation in the game.
Essential
- OmniCC — Rogue cooldowns (Blade Flurry, Adrenaline Rush, Vanish, Sprint) are central to burst windows. Seeing them clearly on your bars is critical.
- KLH Threat Meter — Rogues generate high threat through consistent melee DPS. Using Feint correctly requires knowing where you stand on the threat table.
Hunter
Hunters are ranged physical DPS in vanilla WoW. Managing your pet, maintaining 5-yard minimum Distance, and keeping your rotation tight are the primary skill checks.
Essential
- OmniCC — Rapid Fire, Bestial Wrath, Aimed Shot cooldowns are all time-sensitive.
- KLH Threat Meter — Hunters generate substantial ranged threat. Feign Death is your aggro dump, but knowing when to use it requires seeing the threat table.
- Questie — especially useful for Hunter leveling since you're tracking mobs for pet taming and unusual quest objectives.
Warlock
Warlocks provide powerful ranged shadow/fire damage, pet utility, healthstones, summons, and Soulstones. They're one of the most utility-rich DPS classes.
Essential
- OmniCC — tracking Shadowburn cooldown, Dark Pact, and trinket procs.
- KLH Threat Meter — Warlocks generate significant threat through Corruption ticks and Shadow Bolt crits. Siphon Life and Drain Life heal you, which also generates threat.
Shaman
Shamans are Horde-only in vanilla WoW. They fill healing, melee DPS (enhancement), and ranged DPS (elemental) roles.
Restoration
- HealBot — Shaman AoE healing (Chain Heal) requires selecting targets efficiently. HealBot makes this dramatically faster.
- Decursive — Shaman can remove curses. Same value as other cleansing classes.
Enhancement / Elemental
- OmniCC — Stormstrike, Earth Shock interrupt timing, trinkets.
- KLH Threat Meter — Shaman DPS generates moderate threat; watching the meter helps you time Rockbiter weapon swaps.
